While Korean technology giant Samsung only unveiled their new line-up of televisions, fridges and tablets during their keynote at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), one of the most anticipated devices was noticeably absent – the Galaxy S5 smartphone.
Mere hours before their keynote on Monday, the company hinted that they will only unveil their new flagship device at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February.
Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, said they traditionally release in the first half of the year, and 2014 will be no different.
“We’ve been announcing our first flagship model in the first half of each year, around March and April, and we are still targeting for release around that time. When we release our S5 device, you can also expect a Gear successor with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be improved,” he said in an interview.
Giving insight into the technology that users can expect, he added that Samsung is exploring the idea of an eye scanner built into the device. Apple’s latest device make use of a finger-print reader to unlock the device.
“Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology. We are studying the possibility but can’t really say whether we will have it or not on the S5,” he explained.
According to ZDNet, “The company is rumoured to be working on a vastly improved screen, employing a QHD resolution screen with 2,560×1,440 pixels — about four times the resolution of HD,” as well as another device, the Galaxy F smartphone.
